Book Review For "Why Church Matters"

The book Why Church Matters caught my attention mainly because I have read other good books by Joshua Harris. His writing tends to be easy to understand and yet deep enough to benefit people of all spiritual levels. I would definitely recommend reading Why Church Matters, because its message is simple, understandable, and convicting. It will open your eyes to the benefits of being a part of a local church. No more being a pew warmer if you read this book!

Despite one word that often scares people(doctrine), the book is extremely simple and easy to understand. It guides you through the process of why you should be a part of a local church all the way to how to most benefit from your experience during church services. He compares romance and the pursuit of marriage(a prominent symbol in the new testament) to the way we should pursue Jesus: “God invented romance and pursuit and the promise of undying love between a man and a woman so that throughout our lives we could catch a faint glimmer of the intense love Christ has for those he died to save.” Furthermore, he explains that since “Jesus loves the Church, you and I should, too.”

The book is also convicting. By the time you are done reading, you will say “yes” to being a part of a local church. This book may not have specifically applied to me(he was writing to those who do not think church matters), but it does challenge me to make changes in my areas of weakness with regard to how I view the church. The book had an extremely strong conclusion that left me wanting to participate more fully in my local church.

If you do not think that church matters, read this book. If you do think that church matters but are lacking in commitment, read this book. You will not regret reading Why Church Matters! However, please be aware that this book was written with the “church dater” in mind. Do not expect every chapter to contain information that completely and fully applies to your life if you already think that church matters. Do not let this scare you away though, I think there is something in this book for just about everybody. This book was given to me for free from the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

  1. it sounds interesting. yes... if the "mystery" of marriage is that it is about Christ and the church, then it is a good comparison.
    thanks for sharing.

  2. Yes, it was interesting. It was also an easy read being only 120 pages long. I read it in one day. However, some may want to spend more time meditating on each chapter.
