A True Friend

A true friend sticks closer than a brother. He rejoices with you at every climax and mourns with you in every valley. When God's hand demands that ways must part, he sheds tears of joy for the glory that will be given to Him because of the parting. He stays up at night asking for God's peace and strength to descend upon you. Never once does his faith falter that God will do amazing things through you.

He gazes into the eyes of Jesus and finds a treasure that none can grasp. He sees that His Savior came not to be served but to serve. And likewise, he turns to you to serve without guile. Even if you refused to be a friend to him, he would still be there at your feet, longing only to serve.

Jesus, you are a different kind of King. Every ruler I've ever known wanted service in return, but you offered your service freely, without charge, without guile. Teach me King to let go of desire for service and to simply serve at your feet. If those feet be those of the homeless man at Walmart, then so be it. If they be the feet of prostitute, then so be it. If they be the feet of orphan or the widow, then so be it. Only make my heart willing and teach those around me to do the same. Teach us to be a true friend. Amen.
